These are some Permaculture-aligned resources which he has enjoyed and found insightful:
- Theme of Small & Slow Solutions, Observe & Interact. The rain has come and filled our tanks but with an erratic climate the regular winter rains could be replaced by shorter spells of heavy down pours. We will need to be able to catch and slow down the flow of water through our landscape. I’ve been learning and reminding myself how to achieve this from the following books:
- ‘The Permaculture Earthworks Handbook’ by Douglas Barnes describes how to carry out earthworks on your property utilising permaculture principles. From a small backyard up to many hectares of bush land.
- ‘Retrosuburbia’ by David Holmgren is always a go to for me when I want to glean ideas, whether it be from David’s mind or from one of his case studies. The illustrations by Brenna Quinlan are wonderful. There are some great ideas throughout for reusing grey water from the home.
- ‘Rainwater harvesting for drylands and beyond, Vol.1’ by Brad Lancaster. Brad has produced two volumes of books dedicated to turning scarcity into abundance. From Tucson, Arizona,which receives 280mm of rain a year(!), he shows how you can harvest water for self reliance and habitat.
